9. MAN WITH PRACTICAL INTELLIGENCE

The farmer, the hunter, the fisherman and the gardener are all attached to the earth, and therefore to the material world. They must use their practical intelligence in order to be able to live by their work. Their activity is concentrated on their functional and daily life, therefore their handwriting mirrors their realization of their physical needs.

Sample 54. Here we see the writing of a farmer, whose heavy hand is awkward and unused to forming the letters. From the rightward angle, however, we discover his honesty and sincerity.

The handwritings of farmers and other manual laborers are not very different from those of children. While heavy pressure reveals a powerful man, the childish shape of the letters reflects their primitive and untrained minds. The preponderance of the lower zone characterizes the man who is dominated by the earth's materiality.

Sample 55. This writing is that of a thirty-year-old female cook. A short glance suffices to reveal her simple thoughts, and sound common sense. Her occasionally ornate letters are a result of the old-fashioned style of writing which she was taught. The relatively well-spaced letters and their rightward angle show her orderly practicality, and her adaptation to the demands of daily life.

Sample 56. From the writing of this carpenter we see the traits of a skilled worker, his methodical exactness. He is already seventy years old. Some of the unusual characteristics of his writing are due to his learning a foreign method of penmanship.

Sample 57. This is the writing of a woman who earns her living as a gardener. Her good taste is revealed by the adjustment of her script as a whole, and her sense of duty by the clearness of her letters. The long lower loops show her practical sense.

Sample 58. In this writing we see the manual dexterity of a mechanic who executes his work with exactness and punctuality. The very long lower loops mirror the practical and materialistic man. We also see his sense of organization in the parallel slant of all his up and down strokes.

Sample 59. This tradesman's writing uncovers his materialistic and practical sense. The letters are nicely shaped, which reflect his ability to handle his customers shrewdly. We again see the long lower loops and predominance of the lower zone which characterize this type of person.

Sample 60. This is the script of a salesman. Though the emphasis of the lower zone shows his materialistic sense, the slowness of his writing reveals his general attitude of hesitancy and inhibition. He is probably not too successful in his work, for his uncertain strokes express disappointment. He obviously lacks both energy and any glimmering of initiative.

Sample 61. The handwriting of this business woman reveals, through a predominance of the lower loops, her well-trained and practical intelligence, in addition to her independence of thought and action. The letters are individually shaped, and the clear spacing of words reflects her practical intelligence and initiative.

Sample 62. This script is that of a butler and discloses the born servant—one whose exactness and passion for detail are obvious in the minutely formed letters. We can easily see that his dependent mind exists only to receive orders. He will never be able to be his own master.

Sample 63. Here we find the disciplined mind of a school teacher, which expresses itself in a regular spacing of the words. The writing, as a whole, however, shows that the writer is more able to carry out than to issue orders, since he is somewhat lacking in initiative. From the rounded angle we learn that his intellect has not absorbed his emotions, so that he has a comprehension of the child's nature, and should, therefore, be successful in guiding the characters of his students. The steady basic line reveals his firm character and the energy which is present in his instructive ability.

Sample 64. This specimen of handwriting uncovers an energetic woman who has regimented her life and work. She is the head of a social organization, and knows how to deal with many different people. The rounded angle reveals her warm heart, though the backward angle shows that her mind controls her emotions. This woman will never underrate herself, and she is accustomed to giving orders which she expects to be obeyed. The heavy pressure discloses her domineering instinct, while the circles over her i s show her tendency to act and dress extravagantly.

From these different handwritings we learn that the man with practical intelligence is inclined to concentrate his activity on reality and mundane affairs, somewhat neglecting the spiritual and intellectual side of life.

He can only understand factual matters, while abstract sciences, theories, and ideas remain unknown to him.
